Students Look to Teach Abroad as Graduation Looms
The number of students looking to teach abroad has more than doubled in recent months, according to one TEFL course provider.
TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) specialists i-to-i have seen student enquirers to their website, www.onlinetefl.com, increase by 62% in the past four months, as soon-to-be graduates assess their post-university options.
i-to-i spokesperson, Honor Baldry, said: “The majority of students looking to gain their TEFL certification are final-year students who are thinking about working abroad after they graduate.
“Many want to take a break and get paid to travel after they finish their studies, while others see a stint teaching abroad and gaining experience of another culture as preferable to the possibility of unemployment at home.”
The jobs market for final-year students and graduates continues to be tough. According to recent research by totaljobs.com, 36% of graduates claimed jobseeker’s allowance in the last year, of which half had claimed for longer than six months.
In such difficult employment conditions, it is unsurprising that teaching abroad is becoming such a popular option. Not only does it give graduates the chance to experience life in another culture – they also have the opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience and improve their communication and leadership skills in a challenging environment.
Kelly English, 20, who is in her final year of an English Studies degree at the University of Nottingham, originally wanted to go into publishing, but is now planning to teach English in Japan after she graduates. In contrast to the situation in the UK, she believes that there are many TEFL opportunities out there for British graduates: “Asia in particular provides so many opportunities to teach abroad and certain countries such as China and South Korea are really developing now. I think they’ll be crucial in terms of the world economy later on, so it’s exciting to think that we can get involved in that.
“I’d really recommend this career path to graduates, as it’s so easy for us now to get up and go!
“What really appeals to me with TEFL is that you’re able to live somewhere and actually meet local people and experience something a lot deeper than a tourist’s perception of a place.”
As the majority of TEFL courses, such as those offered by i-to-i, can be taken online, they’re perfect for students to fit around their studies so that they’re ready to teach English abroad as soon as they graduate. TEFL certification with i-to-i can be gained in as little as 12 days, or students can take as long as three months.
