Skiathon For Charity @The Snow Centre

LONDON, 25 March 2011 – The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead is one of the six indoor snow slopes throughout the UK that will host the Disability Snowsport UK’s (DSUK) third National Skiathon on Tuesday May 17th 2011.

Some of Britain’s top freestylers and celebrities will join forces with the British Disabled Ski team to help raise money to help disabled people throughout the UK. Everyone who wants to raise money for charity whilst having fun in the snow can take part in the skiathon. The challenge is to ski 666 runs in six hours at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead and other indoor real snow slopes.

Skiers and boarders of all ages and abilities can take part in teams of six members. Entry costs £66 per team, including equipment hire. Each team needs to raise a minimum of £666 to go towards DSUK’s overall target of £35,000. There will be goody bags with a T-shirt for all participants and the teams that ski the most runs and raise the most money for charity will win great prizes.

Snowsports are an all-over workout that helps improve balance for both people with and without disabilities. Especially for individuals who have to conquer physical limitations again and again in daily life, feeling the wind in your face as you slide down a snow slope can be a priceless experience of freedom and independence. That’s why The Snow Centre strives to bring the thrills of skiing on real snow to everyone, no matter what impairments they may have. In co-operation with DSUK, they have acquired a full range of special equipment to help people with disabilities ski independently or alongside a helper. There are also several fully qualified BASI adaptive snowsports instructors at The Snow Centre. They offer group lessons and personal one-on-one sessions to accommodate for all disabilities.

The Snow Centre’s Campaign to Protect your Brain

LONDON, 18 March 2011 – Safety on the snow slopes are back on the news agenda now that British insurance provider Essential Travel has announced its ‘no helmet, no cover for head injuries’ policy. Essential Travel insures up to 25,000 skiers a season and is aiming to roll out its new policy next season. The company hopes other insurance providers will follow its example if the proposal is approved by its parent company Thomas Cook.

According to recent research by the British Medical Journal, general head injury can be reduced by 35% by wearing a helmet. For children aged 13 years or younger, head injury can even be reduced by 59%. That’s why on the snow slopes at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, all children aged 16 and under have to wear a crash helmet while on the snow, even in non-skiing and snowboarding activities. Helmets are also compulsory for everyone participating in freestyle activities, ringos, lessons from Level 1 to Level 4 inclusive, race training and any form of competition. All lift passes and lessons at The Snow Centre include the hire of equipment and a HEAD helmet free of charge. The Snow Centre promotes safety awareness amongst snowsports enthusiasts but insists that recreational skiers and snowboarders who are over 16 are free to choose for themselves whether they want to wear a helmet.

Insurance company Essential Travel came up with its new policy as a reaction to shocking figures from Austria which state that, compared to last year, double the amount of boarders and skiers have died on the Austrian slopes, while there are still two months of the season remaining. However, the official NHS Choices website reacted to these findings with the following message: “Skiing-related head injuries are rare: based on the study’s data we estimate that one head injury would be expected for every 11,111 skiing outings. It is important to bear this low risk in mind.”
